Finn Harps FPL are our GW1 leaders. They have amassed 80 points with, perhaps, Dejan Kulusevski and Erling Haaland being their key players. Kulusevski stepped in where his more illustrious and expensive Spurs teammates failed, also outscoring the more popular picks in that desirable group of £8 million rated midfielders. Other than Salah, Haaland was the only premium midfielder or attacker to hit double figures. Having Salah made little difference. Everybody else did and pretty much everybody else captained him.

Our highest placed non-Salah captaining manager was ShakeItDown in 23rd place, who took a worthwhile punt on his team mate, Darwin Nunez. He’s a player who is bound to be in a lot more people’s thoughts now. Including pre-season, Darwin has come off the bench to score in every game he has played for Liverpool.

Kane captainers were the big losers this week. Tottenham cruised to victory as expected and when they score four you expect him to at least grab an assist. Son obliged, Kane didn’t. Choosing Kane over Haaland places you no higher than 19th in this league and around 1.5 million in overall rank. Managers have already started to act. Haaland has risen in price, while Kane has dropped. Bear in mind that Spurs travel to Chelsea, and Manchester City welcome newly promoted Bournemouth in GW2. It’s a big call. Who’s making it?

Welcome back. It’s like you’ve never been away. And you would be forgiven for thinking you were looking at the table from the end of last season. Honestly, this league isn’t sponsored by Mission Impossible.

They’re back on top. They’ve been there since February. They almost produced a full house of points returns with only Luke Shaw and Robert Sanchez falling short. Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah were obvious picks, and MI, along with pretty much everybody else bagging an 80+ score, drafted them into their midfield. The majority captained the Liverpool player. I have spotted a few Bruno captainers, but strangely, they tended not to have picked Salah as well. I guess if you had both – Salah against Norwich felt like the better option.

Altogether, twelve teams surpassed the 100 point barrier. Salah, for the fifth consecutive season, has contributed a scoring start. Was anybody tempted to triple captain? It’s a must for next season surely?

We’re back. Welcome new managers and lots of them. I’ve tidied up the blog quite a bit. Thanks COVID. Being at home for 6 months afforded me a bit of time to figure out some WordPress basics.

For, I think, the fourth consecutive season, we’ve an opening day score over the 100 point barrier. Congratulations to Lovleybudd. I’m doubtless going to spell that wrong every single time I type it. Their 102 points was managed using just nine outfield players. Crucially, Mo Salah was handed the armband. And there was significant input from Romain Saiss, Willian and Jamie Vardy, all contributing double figure scores. It sets a good early marker for the highest single gameweek prize. As we’ve seen, COVID-era scores, for whatever reason, are proving to be set at a much higher average, so it may be broken next week.

The majority of the league went with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as captain. He appeared in 75% of squads, more than any other player and was subsequently captained by just under half of those. Tellingly, eight out of the top ten teams opted for Salah. Aubameyang’s single goal was paired with a booking in the first half. West Ham are up next. I wonder if many managers will jump ship this early with such a tasty fixture round the corner. Liverpool and Salah face a much tougher test against Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Craques just couldn’t wait to play their first chip. Why not? As with the previous four seasons, GW1 is not averse to big scores. 90 points from a bench boost is not to be sniffed at. Lets see if the rest of us fair any better when the double gameweeks roll round.

At the bottom, Lucas defied all logic, picking four players without a fixture, two that were never likely to play and captaining Jordan Ayew. Maverick.

Goal of the week

Reece James scored a screamer for Chelsea but my goal of the week came from this game. Salah’s was good (1m44s) but Mateusz Klich’s (2m05s) was cheeky.

We’re off. GW1 has delivered. We had a 100+, three 90+ and a top nine all above 80 points last season. We’ve arguably bettered that this season. Although not topping the century mark, we did see a third of our teams better 80 points. Just about everybody in the top half picked Mo Salah and Raheem Sterling. We all preferred Salah as the captain choice but it was the Man City man who came out on top in terms of points. He delivered a season starting hat trick in a regular routine victory over West Ham and with it came an almost instantaneous price rise. Cook Pass Babtridge’s week winning score owed more to their differential picks, namely Willy Boly and Divock Origi. Origi may not start again for a while once Sadio Mane’s back, but it was worth the one week punt at £5.5 million to get the 12 points he served up.

Manager of the week – Marcus Baker – Cook Pass Babtridge – 99 points

Player of the week – Raheem Sterling – Manchester City – 20 points

Bargain of the week – Eric Pieters – Burnley – 14 points

Twat of the week – Grant Hanley – Norwich City -2 points

Goal of the week – Tanguy Ndombele

Debut goal. Looks like one to monitor. (1m12s in)

Manager of the week – Perfidious Albion – Andrew Swift – 102 points

An early contender for the highest weekly score prize. Don’t be surprised if Perfidious Albion are still sat at the top of that particular pile come double gameweek season. The worldwide average was 53 points – a total that over half of our managers achieved. Perfidious’ masterstroke was avoiding Mo Salah (or not being able to afford Mo Salah) and sticking the armband on Sadio Mane instead. They also bagged 33 points from three defenders and were one of the only managers to pick Aaron Wan Bissaka instead of benching him. Seven of the top ten could have been 12 points better off if they’d promoted the young Palace defender. Perfidious themselves, however, could have been 14 points better off had they plumped for Benjamin Mendy over Harry Kane. Strikers were a real let down this week. The highest scoring was Callum Wilson with 8 points. No striker made double figures. Contrast that with 8 double figure scoring defenders and 6 in the midfield.

An honorable mention to our highest scoring newcomer, But Da Pitch Ain’t 1, who sit in second with 93 points. They tripled up on Liverpool and Manchester City, captaining Salah, and having the same Wan Bissaka foresight as Perfidious.

Player of the week – Roberto Pereyra – Watford – 16 points

Bargain of the week – Jose Holebas – Watford 13 points

Aside Mane’s 16 points for his brace against West Ham, Watford’s Roberto Pereyra returned the same total with the same stats. He was assisted for both goals by Jose Holebas. There’ll no doubt be a few early kneejerk reactions to their performances. They’re as good a bet as anyone at their price point and their next two fixtures offer some points potential. It gets a bit tougher for them from week 4 onward though.

Twat of the week – Phil Jagielka – Everton – -3 points

Phil Jagielka’s season may only last 39 minutes. Expect new signing Yerry Mina to make his bow next week and Jagielka to warm the bench from now on.

Goal of the week – Ruben Neves

He’s £5 million. For now.
