Some midweek games. Cool.

We’re entering into silly season. The December manager of the month is arguably the hardest to win. We’ve six gameweeks to get through, including the usual logjam around the festive period. Most teams play four in nine days – including their first fixture in January.

United are the team looking most likely to get among the points. Chelsea aside, they’re the form team, even with their patched up defence full of midfielders and kids. They’ll have to cope without Angel Di Maria for tonight, but that should mean Juan Mata gets his monthly run out. He’ll probably get double figures and be relegated to the bench by Saturday.

At the opposite end of the form table are Hull, who simply can’t win, and aren’t that much better at scoring. Away to Everton is unlikely to offer much. Hull are among the lowest scoring attacking teams – with Everton among the highest scoring defensive teams. It’s a banker.

Southampton enter phase two of their difficult month. They were so convincingly beat by City on Saturday, that another defeat without scoring tonight might seriously bring in to question the value of keeping on any of their players for the foreseeable. The same with Newacastle, whose run of five straight wins came to an end at the weekend. To add to their neverending injury list, which includes their captain and their keeper, they’ve the suspensions of Moussa Sissoko and Jack Colback to deal with. And games against United, Chelsea, Sunderland and Arsenal before the end of the year. It’s a bare bones squad that could also find it difficult to hold off a semi resurgent Burnley this evening. Thus promoting Danny Ings to a viable cheap striking option. He has four in five game and seven bonus points in the same period.
