I can’t really remember what happened at the start of the gameweek – it was so long ago. I seem to remember City generously handed the title back to United courtesy of one of the worst performances by a title holding team in the history of football. Gareth Barry’s own goal against Southampton was so dumbfounding that it was a serious contender for goal of the week. City play United in 6 weeks time. In between, United have games against Reading, QPR, Sunderland, West Ham and Norwich. City have got to play Chelsea  Villa, Wigan, Everton and Newcastle. The gap is 12 points. By the time they play each other it’s more likely to be more of a gap than less. It’s over. The Buckets League, however, is not…

It doesn’t really matter that I can’t remember last week’s games – this week’s scores were determined largely by what happened yesterday in the Liverpool Swansea fixture. It didn’t at one point look like the “all-eggs-in-a-Liverpool-basket” tactic was going to work following their flat performance against West Brom last Monday. But they redeemed themselves in yesterday’s 5-0 hammering of Swansea. Swansea players definitely had their mind on next week’s final. And that played into the hands of all the managers who went all out Scouse. Luis Suarez was the most captained player of the gameweek, perhaps unsurprisingly, and he duly delivered with a 15 point haul. Jose Enrique was the week’s best scorer. His 19 points came from 1 measly point against West Brom, topped up impressively with full bonus marks, a goal, assist and a clean sheet in the Swansea game. Those who went with Steven Gerrard as their captain will have been relieved he managed to score his penalty yesterday, having missed one against West Brom. Other high scorers in red were Daniel Sturridge with 10 and Stewart Downing with 9. Swansea didn’t offer much yesterday, but the four goals they scored against QPR did come in handy for some managers, particularly as Michu landed back on the score sheet. Angel Rangel and Pablo Hernandez also hit double figures.

And there were plenty of double figured scores among those players that weren’t playing twice. Gareth Bale seems to score every game these days. His value has topped 10 million after his latest double against Newcastle. Ben Foster put in one of the goalkeeping performances of the season for West Brom against Liverpool, and Gareth MacAuley notched 15 points with his clean sheet, winning goal and bonus marks from the same game.

And at the end of it all, Neil Madrid finally win something. 102 points, the joint highest score of the season so far, was enough to see off other 100+ scores from Hedgehog Corpse and (Your Ad Here) to win the weekly award. This monster score puts them back in with a chance of the February Manager of the Month award. This will be decided next week. As many as 20 teams are in with a shout of this award. It’s all to play for.

And as we pass into the final third of the season, it seems our league winner will be 1 of 3 teams – Pescara, Fullers or Hedgehog. Our 3 leaders are separated by 9 points. Between 50 and 70 points back are a pack of 5 teams who look to be battling it out for the 4th place. Yet the other 19 teams still have a chance of some glory – the Buckets Cup starts next gameweek. I’m making the draw tonight. I’ll post it on the Buckets Cup page tomorrow. Good luck.

  • Player of the week – Jose Enrique – 19 points. Could have been in with a chance of posting the hghest weekly score if they’d turned up against the Baggies.
  • Bargain of the week – Gareth MacAuley – 15 points. West Brom still knocking on the door of the top 6
  • Donkey of the week – Christopher Samba – -1 points. Unfit and looking for a new club in May.

Goal of the gameweek

Cameron Jerome?! Again?!??!?
