The African Cup of Nations has started. Big names to have jumped ship are Victor Moses, Jon Obi Mikel, Cheik Tiote, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo and Yaya Toure. Yaya Toure is the only one that will be missed as far as fantasy managers will be concerned. Adel Taarabt has elected to stay at QPR, and Senegal didn’t qualify, so Ba, Cisse and Diame stay also.

This gameweek we have 11 fixtures. Chelsea and Southampton play twice. They play each other on Wednesday night. Chelsea beat Southampton 5-1 in the cup last week, and the smart money would be on another Chelsea victory. They’ve a trickier fixture away at Stoke on Saturday, but it’s a Stoke side that have conceded as many goals in the last 2 games than they have for the last 3 months. Southampton’s forward players could be an option. Their weekend fixture is at Villa – the worst defence in the league. Lambert, Puncheon and Ramirez are all cheap enough and easy enough to slot in. A lot easier than it would be to crow bar in the likes of Mata, Hazard, and Torres. It could easily be a week in which Chelsea defenders keep 2 clean sheets. It doesn’t happen often – but picking a defender as your captain could score you in excess of 24 points. Ultimately, putting as many Chelsea and/or Saints players in your squad this week could be the difference between a 50 and an 80 point score. And don’t forget there’s the January wildcard to utilise. So you can bring as many in as you want – for knack all cost.

Or wait till next week when Arsenal and West Ham play twice.
