Now the Chelsea defence are starting to ship goals left, right and centre, I’ve decided to abandon all hope in big name defenders. Apart from those that are good for the occasional assist and/or goal, and maybe some bonus marks, what’s the point? Stoke City, it seems, are the team to turn to for defensive reliability. It doesn’t feel as bad if a 4.5 million defender concedes the odd goal here and there. It’s a pleasant bonus if they get through a game keeping a clean sheet. Stoke have kept 4 thus far this season. Chelsea also have 4, but have let in 11 goals in their last 4 games – 5 in their last 2 league games. Arsenal have 4 also. Their last came last week against QPR, but they went 5 games without ever looking likely to keep one before that. And they won’t keep one this weekend at United, and Chelsea might find it hard to do the same at Swansea. Stoke, on the other hand, go to Norwich. A much more likely clean sheet bet.

And what of those goal-scoring, bonus-bagging or assist-getting defenders. Well, other than Ivanovic (who surely should be banned this week, but apparently isn’t?) Rafael and Baines, there are lots of good options from the mid table. Riise at Fulham – on 4 assists and 5 bonus points, McCartney at West Ham – on 2 assists and at a measly 3.9 million, Chris Baird has 2 goals for Fulham and Ciaran Clark 6 bonus points for Villa.

This race for the November Manager of the Month prize starts this weekend. And you’ll earn that. Five gameweeks, which includes a midweek block of fixtures at the end of the month. Good luck.
