Key player – Arouna Kone – 6.5m

Wigan have tried, and invariably failed, to invest in a prolific striker. Hugo Rodallega, Amr Zaki and Henri Camara all scraped into double figures once.  Heskey, Boselli, Sammon and Di Santo have all tried and failed. The latest forward committing career suicide is Arouna Kone. He notched 15 goals for Levante last season, but that was after 5 very lean seasons at Sevilla in which he managed a total of grand total of 3. Good luck to him.

New signing – Ivan Ramis – 4.5m

Nothing to do with Ghostbusters.

Bargain buy – Shaun Maloney – 4.5m

Despite being bought at the start of last season, Maloney’s season didn’t really start until the March, playing the last 10 games and scoring 3 goals. He initially struggled for form and fitness, but found his feet to good effect, and was a big part of that great end of season run that saw Wigan survive the drop AGAIN.

Avoid – Mauro Boselli – 5.5m

One  of the worst ever foreign imports into the Premier League. Bought for 6.5 million from Argentinian football, where he’d been the top scorer in their Primera Division, Boselli played 8 times in his first season, scoring zip. And hasn’t been seen since.
