Team guides. Tottenham Hotspur.

Key player – Jermain Defoe – 7.5m

As things stand, Tottenham’s only decent striker. I’d be encouraged by his performance in the recent England friendly with Italy, in which he came on and scored. Bit of a bargain too. Has been playing second (and third) fiddle to a varying bunch of money grabbers and prima donnas for a few seasons now. Just play him. He’s good.

New signing – Gylfi Sigurdsson – 9m

Seems a tad over-priced, but looked a very cultured player in the Swansea set up last year. Will replace the soon-to-depart Luka Moderate. I’d hold fire on picking him just yet, to see how he settles into the team, and how the team settles under Villas-Boas.

Bargain buy – Michael Dawson – 5m

I’m not sure how the first choice Spurs defensive line up is going to look. I’d choose Dawson over Kaboul, Gallas and Caulker – but it’s not my choice. If he does become first choice, 5 million for a top 6 side defender is good value.

Avoid – Stephen Caulker – 5m

Not about to break into the first team anytime soon. His 5 million price tag comes on the back of a good loan season with Swansea. Probably behind Dawson, Vertonghen and Kaboul in the pecking order, so appearances will be limited.
