Team guides. West Ham United.

Key player – Carlton Cole – 5.5m

No West Ham player has been valued any higher than 6 million, so there a few potential bargains to be had here, particularly when you consider that most of this team have Premiership experience. Not least Carlton Cole, who probably still harbours England ambitions. Ended last season with 15 goals, and has reached double figures in the Premier League before. He may need to do that again to give West Ham a chance of staying up.

New signing – Mohamed Diame – 5m

Wigan may have made a mistake selling one of their best players to a team who will probably be battling against relegation along with themselves come May. Although I’m note sure exactly where he’ll fit in with the other central midfield cloggers Allardyce has brought in to the club.

Bargain buy – Jack Collison – 5m

Got his career back on track last season after 14 months out. A Championship season may have been just what Jack Collison needed to work his way back into the side. He played 31 times and scored 6 goals, including 2 in the play off semi final. A versatile and skillful midfielder in amongst the cloggers.

Avoid – James Collins – 5m

West Ham aren’t going to keep too many clean sheets. There are cheaper Hammers defenders who you could turn to in an emergency, to fill those last few positions in your team. Collins at 5 million is a bit of a waste.
