Key player – Adam Lallana – 6m

The new Le Tiss. Possibly. A goalscoring attacking midfielder much coveted by bigger clubs and now making his first step up into the Premier League. Keeping Lallana and Ricky Lambert fit is key to Southampton remaining a Premier League club next season.

New signing – Jay Rodriguez – 5.5m

Southampton paid a hefty sounding 7 million pounds to buy Rodriguez from Burnley. They’ll be hoping he can replicate his Championship goal scoring form of the last two seasons in which he notched 36 league and cup goals, and form a partnership with Ricky Lambert.

Bargain buy – Ricky Lambert – 6m

Southampton’s most expensive player, but still could be considered a bargain. The most lethal lower league striker of the last few seasons. He’s scored 88 goals in three years at Southampton. Much like Grant Holt at Norwich, it’s been a long and convoluted journey to the Premier League, but I reckon Lambert can hack it. A 15 goal season might be on the cards.

Avoid – Jos Hooiveld – 4.5m

Again, as with Norwich and Reading, it’s probably a little unfair to suggest that any of the Saints players must be avoided at all costs. No player is valued higher than 6 million, and all defenders are priced in the 4-4.5 million bracket for a reason. Hooiveld is one of those defenders who has a knack for scoring the odd goal here and there. This might not happen as often in this league. And even if he does, he’ll concede many, many more.
