Key player – Juan Mata – 9.5m

A very successful first season saw Mata finish as the 6th best scoring midfielder. Playing in two international tournaments over the summer could take its toll, but his appearance in the community shield suggests he’s in line to start ahead of the 6,262,803,497,234,970 other midfielders on Chelsea’s books.

New signing – Eden Hazard – 9.5m

A young creative midfielder to go with the other 6,262,803,497,234,970 young creative midfielders in Chelsea’s squad. Will probably play in the 3 of a 4-2-3-1 with Mata and Ramires. Will be worth the investment if his first season is as productive and successful as Mata’s.

Bargain buy – Ramires – 7m

Di Matteo pushed Ramires further forward last season to great effect. Started scoring, including a great chip in the Champions League semi against Barca. If he starts there this season, and keeps his place, this could be 7 million well spent over the extra 2 million you’ll need to land Hazard.

Avoid – Fernando Torres – 10m

If his performances in the Euro’s and the Community Shield are anything to go by, Torres still hasn’t rediscovered the ability to play football. Don’t spend 10 million on him. It will be a waste of money.
