Gameweek 22 preview

January 20, 2012

Back to writing some weekly previews. I think it’s my duty to try and help you all out. I want to make this worth your while. If you want to get a mention on the roll of honour – maybe even win a bit of dollar – read the following…

First of all remember that you have your January wildcard. A useful additional wildcard for those that used their proper one in week three – not so much for bringing in new Premier League players, but for getting rid of the shit you’ve been unable to shift…..since week three.

And already there have been some interesting additions to the players list. Thierry Henry is back at Arsenal for eight weeks. He’ll be a fairly pointless addition to your fantasy team – as will Landon Donovan at Everton and Robbie Keane at Villa. Don’t bother with Scholes either. He might grab a few goals, but he couldn’t tackle in his 20’s – he’s got no chance now he’s hit 50. He’ll pick up more cards than score or assist.

Newcastle have bought another Demba. They’ll be hoping he can transfer his Bundesliga scoring form straight in to the Premiership. This may happen. Luis Suarez didn’t take long to get into a scoring groove last January. The same can’t be said, however, for Andy Carroll or Fernando Torres.

Gary Cahill is cheap. His price has dropped from 5.5 to 5.2 million. Bolton haven’t been the go to team for defensive options this season. Cahill did OK as the best of a bad bunch, scoring almost twice as many points as the next best Bolton defender. Now he’s at Chelsea, I presume he’s going to become John Terry’s first choice partner – in place of David Luiz – who is way too much of a maverick for this league. David Luiz was bought last January.

And now Cahill has made the switch, I’d be extremely surprised if Bolton keep a clean sheet this week – or any other week for that matter. They’ve got Liverpool. Expect Skrtel, Enrique, Agger, Johnson and Reina to end up with 6 points each at least by the gameweek.  Chelsea have a tricky away tie at Norwich, who always score – yet also always concede. Potential goalfest. Adebayor is missing for Spurs against parent club, Man City, who, despite a depleted defence, kept an easy clean sheet against Wigan. There’s still enough fire power about Spurs without Adebayor to pose a threat on the City goal. United’s defence is almost back to normal. Smalling and Jones have been in and out with illness and knocks for the last few weeks, but will probably both play against Arsenal on Sunday. As may Jonny Evans, with Jones moved forward. Whether you pick any of these against the leagues best striker is another matter. Steven Fletcher is the form player in the league right now. Already on nine goals for the season, he looks certain to surpass his figures for last season. Wolves come up against a Villa side who swing from shaky to solid on a weekly basis. Fletcher could be the ideal Ba replacement.
