Gameweek 15 preview

December 9, 2011

The Premier League may be a tiny bit predictable at the moment. Top seven team play bottom thirteen team – top seven team, more often than not, win – point gap widens. Fantasy league is a different beast. Take, for instance, Blackburn’s forward line. It’s a  surprising statistic, but between them, Hoilett and Yakubu outscore most of the rest of the Premier League’s first choice front men – including Liverpool and Chelsea. Drogba or Yakubu? Carroll or Hoilett? And you save yourself a few quid to buy the obvious. Just don’t look further back with Balckburn. Paul Robinson hasn’t kept a clean sheet yet. Yet, they come up against the one of the most shot shy attacking lines in the league this weekend. Sunderland have a new manager, but even Martin O’Neill will have his work cut out trying to solve these Mackem striking problems.

In contrast – top of the clean sheet pile is Mark Schwarzer and Michel Vorm. Schwarzer has always been a reasonable mid price keeper option. He notched his sixth clean sheet against Liverpool last weekend. Considering Fulham’s patchy form, this is another surprising stat. Fulham meet Swansea, and Vorm, this weekend at the Liberty Stadium. The majority of Vorm’s clean sheets have come at home – whereas Schwarzer has kept three at Craven Cottage and three more on his travels. This quite literally has 0-0 written all over it. Either that or 5-5.

And whilst we’re on the clean sheet tip – Norwich haven’t kept one either. John Ruddy, is in fact, the lowest scoring first choice keeper in the league. Maybe not that surprising a statistic – and it probably won’t change this week. They always look likely to concede. They face, however, a Newcastle team with no defence. Arguably the best defensive pairing in the league up until last week, are now no longer – Coloccini and Stephen Taylor are out – the latter for the season. And they have no fit central defenders in reserve. They are having to play with a back line made up of full backs. I’m extremely pessimistic – look to Norwich for good low-priced scoring options this week.

Notice how I didn’t mention M********* C*** or M********* U***** once.
